Abstract
The androconial organ of Strephonota porphyritis (H.H. Druce, 1907) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae: Theclinae) is described in detail. Its shape is unique in the Strephonotina subtribe, and its forewing location is reported as unique within the Eumaeini tribe. This discovery supports the revalidation of Strephonota kourouciensis (Brévignon, 2003), reinstated status (type locality: Kourou, French Guiana), which is no longer considered a synonym of the allopatric S. porphyritis (type locality: Belém, Pará, Brazil). The distinction of the species using androconial organs is corroborated by differences in genitalia and DNA. Four syntypes of Thecla porphyritis have been found, however, they do not all represent this species. To stabilize nomenclature, a lectotype is hereby designated for this taxon. Females of S. porphyritis and S. kourouciensis are described for the first time.
